It all started as what we thought would be a hobby. We had an old water tank we just replaced because it leaked in the top area. What to do with this old water tank was now something we were grappling with until my wife suggested we use it as a fish pond. I contacted a neighbour who was already into the fish farming business in my area and asked him if it was ok to use the old water tank like a fish pond. He answered in the affirmative, so we started with what we already had on hand.

We bought 300 juveniles (two months old) fish, which we placed in the old tank pond and, after a month, we had gone through a steep learning curve and had understood the strategies we would implement to turn it into a commercial venture. So, we bought three additional old used water tanks and converted them to fish ponds. We increased our tank capacity from 500 to 2000. When we saw that we needed a big water pond to house the fishes when they grow bigger so that they are not limited in space, we had to construct a larger pond using Galvanised pipes and tarpaulin, which brought our total pond capacity to 4,000 fish.

We paid for the construction of locally made ovens, which we used to dry the catfish into dried catfish. We dry our fish to get better pricing for them when they are dried than when we sell them as fresh fish. We also can deliver them to a broader market without compromising the taste as dried ones are better preserved. We gas to power our oven and process fresh catfish into dried ones because using firewood or coal emits a lot of carbon which ends up staining the fish, changing their colour and giving them a bad taste. We plan to increase our pond capacity to 10,000 fish by the end of this year and continue to scale up the business as we see this as a very viable business.
