There are many who don’t know that there is a male and female Pawpaw tree, they just think that they’re all the same. Well, they are not, though the difference may not be clear if you have not observed it or have never been told.

We have been throwing away the pawpaw waste after eating them at the back of the compound where we left some land available for gardening purposes. Over time the pawpaw seeds sprouted and have been growing very well. However, they are becoming crowded and we need to remove those that are male among them so that the female once will mature well without any hindrances or challenges for space in the area.

How do we know which of the trees are male and which ones are female, you might ask? Well, that is the purpose of this article and you just need to pay good attention to understand it. It isn’t rocket science, it’s easy to comprehend.

In a male pawpaw tree, the bloom (flower head) is attached to a long stem-like structure which will never transform into a pawpaw tree, but instead, will fall out with time. Another thing you will observe is that the bloom is many. Are they totally useless? The simple answer is, know because of the help in pollination of the female ones. So, you should keep one male pawpaw tree around if you don’t have one in your neighbourhood.

In the case of a female pawpaw tree, the bloom (flower head) is attached almost directly to the tree, there are no long stem-like structures. Also, the blooms are not many, they look fatter and shorter and as time goes on, they mature and the flowers will fall off leaving a small pawpaw fruit which grows with time to become the big pawpaw fruit we all know and see.
